When all you want is a restful night’s sleep, there’s nothing more annoying than a squeaky bed! Whether it’s at home or in a hotel, bed frames can creak.

Lots of different things can cause creaking issues. Your metal or wooden bed frame may have been loosely put together, or certain parts have come loose over the years. Maybe you have a cheap spring mattress, or the floor could even be the source of the problem.

If you’re sick of the sound of noisy beds, it could be time for a new one. A divan bed could be just what you’re looking for because they’re generally considered to be quieter than wooden and metal bed frames.

Enjoy peace and quiet you deserve

Divan beds are made up of a solid upholstered frame with a mattress on top. The base can have a solid platform top, which can provide a better support for the mattress than a slatted bed frame, and therefore you tend to enjoy improved support from your mattress.

Alternatively, the base can have an inbuilt spring-based system, which feels softer when you lie down. Whichever variant you go for, you can expect more even weight distribution than alternative bed frames. This is good news for you, and it can also help keep your mattress in good shape for longer.

Divan beds tend to have fewer joints and moving parts than a traditional slatted bed frame, and that means it’s less likely to become squeaky over time. In addition, they’re designed to work with particular mattresses only, so you know your mattress and bed frame will work well together.

If you do hear squeaking…

Even though divan beds can be especially hardwearing, and you have fewer moving parts to worry about, squeaking can occur from time to time. This is particularly true of old and well-used divan beds. But if you think there’s still life in your divan bed yet, there could be a simple solution to your squeak.

To fix your creaky divan bed, you might just need to tighten a few loose screws of bolts. Take a closer look at all the joints on your frame and tighten them with a screwdriver or a wrench. To make sure you have the tightest possible fit, you could even take the frame apart, put it back together and add plastic washers.

Alternatively, you could give the metal joints a dash of WD40, although bear in mind that this is a water repellent, and not a lubricant, so could eventually make the situation worse. If you don’t have any to hand, you could use a few drops of vegetable oil instead, or 4-In-1 oil spray. This will act as a lubricant.

Don’t forget to check the floor

If you haven’t had any luck finding the source of your squeak, then it’s time to investigate the floor. You can carry out a simple test by moving the bed and walking back and forth to see if your floor is causing the problem. If this turns out to be the case, you could attempt to fix the floor itself, or consider moving your bed to another part of the room or buying a rug. This may mean you need to rearrange your room and other pieces of bedroom furniture, but it’s worth it for a peaceful night’s sleep!

Is it time for a new bed?

Whatever kind of bed frame you have, if it’s seen better days, then it could be time to invest in a new one. Signs include an uneven or sagging base, awkward creaks that you can’t get rid of, or crunching noises when you move. Other warning signs include warped or broken slats.

When it comes to searching for a new bed, bear in mind that a well-made can give you years and years of service – just as long as you take care of it.  If you’re looking for beds that are built to outlast others, then a divan bed could be right up your street.

It’s no wonder divan beds are one of the most popular types of bed in the UK. There are plenty of different varieties to choose from, including luxurious spring edge divan beds with an open-coil or pocket spring unit to absorb shock. This is where the mattress sits, providing an extra level of durability because there’s move give.
