When the time comes to choose a new bed frame, one thing’s for sure: you’ll be spoiled for choice! With so many different options to choose from, it can be hard to know for sure what’s right for you.

Will a divan bed work best for your space? Or will a classic bed frame be a better fit? Well, the reality is that it depends entirely on your individual needs and preferences. So have a read through our guide below to see which one could suit you best.

Divan beds

Divans bed bases look like a fabric-covered box. They usually come with built-in storage, like drawers, ottoman storage and sprung bases. Some also come with castors or small feet to raise them off the ground, and shallow versions are also available. Here are a few other reasons why you might want to go for a divan bed.

  • If you have limited space in your bedroom, divan beds offer a small footprint to help you save on space. They tend to have the same dimensions as the mattress.

  • They also come with handy storage, neatly built into the bases, which is ideal if you don’t have much room for your stuff elsewhere.

  • They can give you extra support while you sleep, as they have firm padded tops (otherwise known as platform tops).

  • There’s more scope for personalisation because you can usually pick your own headboard. If you fancy a change in future, you can buy a new headboard rather than a whole brand-new bed.

Things to consider

Because divan beds also come with storage, they count as a multi-purpose piece of furniture. Unfortunately, that also means they can come with a higher price tag than some other bed frames.

Plus, it’s worth bearing in mind that it can sometimes be tricky (but not impossible!) to rearrange your bedroom once you’ve decided on a spot for your divan. That’s because it can become really heavy once you’ve stored all your stuff inside.

Bed frames

Generally, bed frames and bedsteads have more of a classic look than divan beds. They’re available in all kinds of different materials, including metal, wood, fabric and leather; it’s up to you to decide which one you want to go for, and what kind of décor you prefer. Bed frames are normally made up of a few separate parts (which is usually sold as one package). The headboard, footboard, side rails and slats come together to make one large unit.

  • They’re available in many different shapes and sizes, and there are all kinds of styles to choose from, so you’re sure to find something that works for you.

  • You can pair your bed frame with a mattress of your choice, so you can create the perfect place to rest your head.

  • All-in-one bed frames tend to come at a lower cost, so if have a smaller budget they could be your best bet.

Things to consider

If you’re pressed for space in your bedroom, just bear in mind that classic frames don’t give you that precious built-in storage space that divans do. They also have larger dimensions, so be careful if you only have a small room. Remember – measure twice, buy once!
