When it comes to deciding whether you need a new mattress, or which new mattress to buy, it isn’t as easy as you may think. Not only are there all sorts of options to choose from, but there’s also a lot of conflicting information out there. And that can make the process much more confusing that it needs to be.

Luckily for you, we’re here to clear up some common misconceptions about sleep and mattresses. We’ll separate the myths from the facts, so you know exactly where you stand. Read on to find out more.

Myth: “If you flip your mattress, you won’t need to replace it”

Reality: Well, wouldn’t it be great if this were true? Unfortunately, the majority of modern mattresses aren’t built in a symmetrical fashion. And this means they don’t actually have the same construction on both sides. For example, the side you sleep on could have additional layers of cushioning, gel or foam to maximise comfort and support. So if you flip it over, you won’t have that any longer.

Myth: “You swallow 8 spiders a year”

Reality: Even if you’re not an arachnophobe, it’s likely to please you that this isn’t true (or, at least there’s no proof that this is true, and it’s highly unlikely. The fact is that we make noises and vibrations in our sleep that’s are more than likely to scare spiders away from us. So, in all probability, they’re going to steer well clear from your mattress, let alone your mouth!

Myth: “Hard mattresses are better for back pain”

Reality:  It’s a common misconception that a firm mattress is best for people who suffer from a bad back. However, even though a very firm mattress can give you great support, and it can also relieve pressure on your back, the truth is that it doesn’t conform to the natural curves of your body. At the other end of the scale, a soft mattress will conform well to your body, but it won’t give you optimum support. And so, it’s generally considered that a medium-firm mattress is the way to go if you have back pain; it strikes the perfect balance between support and comfort.

Myth: “Some people just don't dream”

Reality: Even if you don’t remember your dreams, that doesn’t mean you don’t have them. All the ins and outs of dreaming are still a bit of a mystery, but it’s known that everyone dreams throughout the night. It’s believed to be a way of processing emotions and experiences we’ve had during the day. Most people also move around more when they dream, so if you’re sharing a bed with a partner then choose a mattress that won’t transfer your dream-fuelled wriggling to their side and ruin their night’s sleep, too.

Myth: “The most expensive mattress is always best”

Reality: There’s no denying that there is some correction between how much you pay and the quality of the mattress you get. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the world’s most expensive mattress would give you everything you need. As with everything, you’ll need to consider your budget, but ultimately it comes down to choosing the right mattress with the right features for your body.

Myth: “Your new mattress will feel right from day one”

Reality: While a new mattress should certainly feel like an improvement on your last one, you shouldn’t worry if it doesn’t feel absolutely perfect the first time you use it. It doesn’t necessarily mean you picked the wrong one, it just means that your body needs to get used to a new sleeping position. Your muscles will have become used to your old mattress, and they’ll have adjusted to find their most comfortable position, so be patient and you should soon learn to love it.
