Bedroom New Year's resolutions

What are your bedroom new years resolutions? Read our latest blog post from Bed Guru - The Sleep Specialists

3rd January, 2019

New Year resolutions – you either love them or hate them. However, the start of a new year is always a good point to have a good tidy-up, clean out the old to make room for the new. We all make resolutions like losing weight, getting fitter, or spending more time doing the things we love, but don’t forget your poor old bedroom on your New Year list of things to do as sleep is the underlying factor for all of these. There’s plenty you can do to make this one of the best rooms in the house, from a complete top-to-toe redecoration, new wardrobes or, most importantly, a new bed.

New Year Resolutions

Why do I need a new bed?

Just like everything else, beds (and mattresses) eventually wear out or go past their best. It may seem strange as all we do is sleep in a bed, but you’d be surprised how much your poor old bed puts up with! If you’re a wriggler then your constant movement can put quite a strain on joints and base struts, and that mattress definitely isn’t going to last forever. We recommend that you change a good quality mattress every eight years to ensure you always get a good night’s sleep.

What can you do this New Year to make your bedroom even better? Here are a few suggestions.

Get organised

There’s nothing worse than a disorganised, messy bedroom. Your aim is to create an oasis of calm and tranquillity where you can relax and get a good night’s sleep. If you have clothes all over the floor and a room full of knick-knacks, trinkets and mess, that serene atmosphere is going to be pretty tricky to master!

If you don’t have the space for more wardrobes, a tallboy or a chest of drawers then why not take a look under your bed? You’ll find you have a big empty void that’s ideal for storage, and the best way to make the most of it is by replacing your old bed with a divan or ottoman with built-in storage.

What’s the difference between a divan and an ottoman?

A divan has drawers that you access at the sides of the bed. This is great if you have plenty of room around the edge of your bed, but if you’re tight on space then an ottoman may be a better option. These have hydraulic lifts that raise the whole of the top of the bed either from the bottom or the side. Make the most of your divan or ottoman’s under-bed storage by using vacuum packs to flat-pack those clothes you want to store.

Replace your mattress

As we said earlier, good mattresses should be replaced every eight years so that you’re assured of maximum comfort every night. After that, you may find that the springs lose their bounce, and that memory foam starts to forget what it’s supposed to be. The result is a lumpy, bumpy bed that doesn’t give you the support you need for a good night’s sleep.

If you don’t have the funds to replace your mattress (and we know that January can be a financially tight month), then a good ‘stop-gap’ measure is a mattress topper. This is a thin // not thin, they can be up to 7cm deep for good ones pad that sits on top of the mattress and provides you with a certain amount of additional support. It’s not a permanent solution, but it’s a great way to tackle those lumps and bumps until you can afford to buy a new mattress.

Banish creaky bed frames

If you’re doing a revamp of your bedroom then this could be the perfect excuse to get rid of that old creaky bed frame and invest in something a bit more modern and comfortable. An ottoman or divan bed frame gives you the added advantage of some extra storage too, and although it does represent quite an investment, it’s a design that’ll last for a long time and give you years of comfort and restful nights.

Keep it simple – revamp your bedclothes

If money’s too tight to mention, then a simple way of putting a little bit of New Year magic into your favourite room is to revamp your bedding. A new duvet cover and matching sheets and pillowslips will give your bed an instant makeover. Add a bed cover for a touch of sophistication and you’re well on your way to keeping at least one of your New Year resolutions – a gorgeous bedroom!
