Clean Sleeping The Must-Try Health Trend of 2017

Slip back into bed and give this year’s health trend a try. ‘Clean sleeping’ is already sweeping the nation and, frankly, it’s a dream come true…

No, it’s nothing to do with washing your sheets, it’s simply an age-old mantra in a new guise. ‘Clean sleeping’ means making a conscious effort to sleep for 7 to 8 hours every night, to detox and repair your body and mind. All you have to do is make sleep your number one priority.

You have health guru Gwyneth Paltrow to thank for kick-starting 2017’s must-try trend, the Daily Mail published an extract from her new book ‘Goop Clean Beauty’ – and now her ‘clean sleeping’ movement has really caught on. She says that good-quality sleep is key to ageing gracefully, staying slim and having great hair, but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Nutrition expert Dr Frank Lipman inspired Gwyneth by talking her through the health issues that poor-quality sleep can trigger in your body and mind – by unsettling your metabolism and hormones. Now she wants to save us all from potential weight gain and anxiety, stress and other nasties by promoting ‘clean sleep’.

“The lifestyle I lead is based not just on clean eating, but also on clean sleeping: at least seven or eight hours of good quality sleep – and ideally even 10,” Paltrow said. “You might think it’s just a midlife thing, but if you find yourself feeling irritable, anxious or depressed, if you get easily frustrated, forgetful or struggle to cope with stress like you used to, it could be because you’re not getting enough good-quality sleep.”

So, how do you chalk up more hours of shuteye on a daily basis? The ‘clean sleep’ advocate has her ideas:

1. Yoga Nidra

“Yoga nidra, which means ‘psychic sleep’ is a form of meditation that is believed to give you the benefits of sleep when you’re awake” – Gwyneth Paltrow, via Daily Mail.

Struggling to switch off and fall asleep? Lie on your back, close your eyes and tune into your senses. Yoga nidra is a good technique for getting to sleep. Concentrate and feel your body relaxing slowly, notice your limbs feeling heavier – from each of your finger-tips to your toes, up your arms and across your torso. Focusing your thoughts on your body and breathing, should relax you – which is the perfect headspace for sleep.

2. Finish your dinner 3+ hours before bedtime

Sleep experts, like Paltrow, don’t recommend eating close to bedtime, because the digestive process could disturb your sleep and make you feel uncomfortably bloated. For good-quality sleep, ban your bedtime snacks, don’t cave into your midnight munchies and avoid alcohol too.

3. Squeeze a few drops of lavender pure essential oil onto your pillow

Of course, sleeping properly for 7 to 8 hours a night isn’t a new idea by any stretch. But ‘clean sleeping’ is a much-needed health trend that can make a positive and tangible change to your body mind and life.

The world’s largest sleep survey found that 77% of people in the UK fail to wake up refreshed. Men lose 28 minutes of sleep each night (which adds up to 5 days a year) and women on average lose 56 minutes each night (10 days a year).

So make a change in 2017 and feel the benefits of sleep – we’re always here to give you advice on all things beds and mattress.
