Mattress topper or new mattress?

If you’re struggling to choose between getting a mattress topper or a new mattress, that fits both your situation and your wallet, we’ve listed a few common scenarios and solutions.

If you’re having trouble sleeping and suspect your mattress could be the problem, you might be worried about paying out for a new one. After all, there’s no denying that it is a considerable investment – especially when you go for top-quality products with the best durability.

Sometimes though a mattress topper is a tempting answer to all your problems – at least as a short-term solution. But more often than not, this won’t help you get a better night’s sleep in the long run, especially if your mattress is more than five years old. When it gets to a certain age, your mattress is likely to develop problems that will affect the quality of your sleep.

So, if you’re struggling to choose between getting a mattress topper or a new mattress, what should you do? Well, to help you come to a decision that fits both your situation and your wallet, we’ve listed a few common scenarios and solutions.

If your mattress is too firm

Did you buy a firm mattress to give you more support, and now you’re finding it too hard? Well, don’t panic, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to pay out for a new one. If you’re in this situation, it’s a good idea to consider a mattress topper – the cushioning should make all the difference to how comfy you feel. Plus, it’s a fraction of the cost of a new mattress.

When your mattress is sagging

We hate to break it to you, but it sounds like you need a new mattress! Over time, they tend to sag and develop indentations, and it’s only going to get worse. Not only does this have the potential to cause serious discomfort and difficulty sleeping, but it could also leave you with lots of physical problems, such as chronic neck pain, back aches and joint discomfort.

For mattresses that are too warm at night

This can be really irritating, because our bodies need to be able to cool just slightly in order to enjoy a fully restorative sleep. If your mattress isn’t all that breathable and makes you feel hot, then you’ll be compromising on a good night’s rest. But you’ll be pleased to hear that you probably don’t need to fork out for a new mattress (if this is the only issue with it). You can simply make improvements to your current one with a highly breathable mattress topper – they’re designed to increase cooling capabilities and they have great benefits for those who feel the heat in bed.

Think in the long term

If you’re having an issue with your sleeping situation, the first port of call is to figure out what the problem actually is. Don’t just go out and buy a brand-new mattress if a mattress topper will take care of the issue. And likewise, there’s no point buying a mattress topper if what you really need is a brand-new mattress; you might as well put your money towards the right thing.

Like we said, getting a mattress topper is a cheaper solution in the short term, but it won’t help you in the long run. Of course, new mattresses are significantly pricier, but if you have an old, worn-out mattress, replacing it with a new mattress is the best (and only) long-term solution.

Remember, you get what you pay for

As a rule of thumb, quality means comfort and durability. So whether you’re buying a new mattress topper or investing in a brand-new mattress, you should always bear in mind that you get what you pay for.
