When you ditch your single or double mattress for a king-size one, you’re sure to love having more room to stretch out at night. It’ll make even more difference if you’re someone who shares their bed with a partner. Yes, we know how much they mean to you, but we all want a bit of our own personal space, don’t we?

If you’ve made the decision to upgrade, you’ll find plenty of different types of king-size mattresses to choose from. There’s a solution for practically every kind of sleeper out there – whether you need help staying cool or you can’t sleep without lots of support. And no matter which one you go for, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without that extra space for so long.

If you get too hot at night

Some people are naturally hot sleepers, and this can have a big impact on the quality of sleep you get. If this sounds like you, you’ll want a king-size mattress that helps keep you nice and cool – so you can forget about waking up in a sweat.

Latex mattresses are one of the coolest materials used in mattress construction today, so it’s well worth looking out for one of these. Or you could just go for one with a naturally breathable top layer – such as cotton, wool, cotton, or even cashmere (if you feel like splashing out). You could even pick a king-size mattress made from organic materials to provide natural comfort.

Alternatively, even though memory foam mattresses are often thought to be one of the warmer options, some are specifically designed to help keep you cool. For example, the premium Pocket Memory Cool 3600 comes with a seasonal temperature-sensitive cover.

Top tip: remember to use lightweight covers on your bed. Natural, breathable fibres are best, since polyester and other synthetic materials tend to trap heat. Try and keep your bedroom as cool as possible before you go to sleep. Depending on the season, a few minutes with the window open should do the trick.

For restless sleepers

So, you (or your partner) move around a lot when you’re trying to go to sleep. And perhaps your old and worn-out mattress isn’t helping the problem. If you don’t already have a king-size, the extra space alone could help you feel more comfortable – and your other half might really appreciate having some extra room.

You’ll have plenty of options to choose from to help prevent that annoying tossing and turning. A king-size memory foam mattress could be just the ticket. For one thing, their natural conforming properties can be a big help with motion isolation (which help prevent your sleeping partner from feeling your movement). And it could also make you feel much more comfortable at night, by relieving pressure points and supporting your spine.

Another option could be a king-size latex mattress. They’re designed to distribute your body weight as efficiently as possible, which could make you feel more at ease. Do make sure you don’t have an allergy to latex, though.

If you like a firm mattress

Whether you’re a back sleeper, like to crash out on your stomach, or are a heavy sleeper, you could enjoy a firm king-size mattress. Memory foam is designed to respond to your weight and movement, so this option could work for you. Hybrid mattresses blend supportive coils with cushioning, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Need a firm mattress to provide more support and reduce your back pain? King-size orthopaedic mattresses are made to help. Just remember to read the descriptions carefully before making any final decisions about which one to buy.

For landlords

If you rent out a property and are looking for a king-size mattress your tenants can rely on, you’re best off buying brand-new. Going for a second-hand one won’t give you the durability you want, and it’s unlikely that you’ll save money in the long run.

Don’t forget to add a mattress topper. It’ll help to keep the mattress clean and tidy, as well as extending its life. It’s important to remember your legal requirements, too – for example, all soft and upholstered furnishings (including mattresses and sofas) must be fire-resistant. So you’ll need to ensure yours has a fire-safety label attached.

And if you have the space

You could always think about going for a super king bed, they are a whole foot wider than standard king-size and the perfect solution if you want the ultimate luxury when you hit the sack.

What’s the easiest way to buy?

Whatever kind of king-size mattress you fancy, you’ll be able to get your hands on it online. There’s no need to spend the day wandering restlessly around bed stores – you’ve got a world of options at your fingertips online, so long as you know the kind of sleeper that you are.
