The Best Upholstered Beds with Storage

As houses get smaller, our collections of ‘stuff’ seem to get proportionally bigger. That leaves most people with a very modern problem – where do you store all those bits and pieces, seasonal clothes, and bedroom trinkets when they’re not needed? We love decluttering and creating a restful, minimalist look in the bedroom. But all that stuff has to go somewhere, right?

That’s where upholstered beds (with a bit of a trick up their sleeves) come in. These stylish, comfortable beds have hidden storage spaces that make the very best use of that under-the-bed area of the bedroom – a spot that’s rarely utilized to the fullest advantage. They provide you with the option of tucking away your winter woolies during the summer, or keeping precious objects well away from little fingers all year round.

There are two main types of upholstered beds with storage – Ottoman styles and Divans. Both have their advantages, and the type you choose will depend on a few practical factors, combined with your own personal preference.

The practical considerations

The number one consideration you need to take into account before you make a decision is how much space you have around the bed. If you’re limited to ‘just enough room to get your slippers off’ on either side, then a divan with drawers is not a practical choice, as you won’t be able to fully open the drawers and make the most of the storage space. An Ottoman style where the upper part of the bed lifts (either from the foot or the side) on a hinged system makes much more sense. By lifting the top of the bed, you can access the whole of the storage area underneath – although you might have to remake the bed properly afterwards.

What are you storing? If you’re using your under-the-bed area for storing seasonal clothes then you probably won’t need constant access to it and again, an Ottoman would be a better choice. However, if you’re storing nick-knacks and bits you need to get to regularly (and you have plenty of space around the bed), then a divan with drawers on the side is much more practical.

A divan is easier to use if you have limited mobility, as it’s simply a matter of opening and closing drawers. Ottoman beds, both end and side opening versions, are usually on an ‘assisted’ hinge system, which makes them relatively easy to open and close, although they can be heavy. With an Ottoman, you don’t have to bend so far to open the storage area. There are pros and cons to both type of storage bed if you struggle with mobility, so the best thing you can do is to visit a store and try each type for yourself and see which one you get on with the best.

Your personal taste

The practical points are important, but ultimately the type of bed you choose comes down to your own personal tastes. Upholstered beds add a touch of indulgent luxury into any bedroom, with soft material, stylish designs and a warmer, cosier feel. If you’re looking for upholstered beds with storage then look for beds that don’t compromise on style for the sake of practicality.

The upholstered sides will disguise the drawers that are incorporated into the bed, without making the bed look overly bulky or cumbersome. With divans, you can have anything from two to four separate drawers, while with an Ottoman you have either a single, large space or compartmentalized sections.

Whichever type of upholstered bed with storage you choose, there’s one thing you can be certain of – there’ll be no effect on the comfort of your bed. If you’re still not sure which type of storage bed to choose, why not talk to us and have a look at what’s on offer at Bed Guru?
