Bed Guru Mattress Care Guide

The Bed Guru mattress care guide will help you look after your mattress and ensure it keeps giving you a good night's sleep for as long as possible.

A good quality mattress will last you years and years. If you look after it properly it will last even longer. Here at Bed Guru we always advise buying the best quality mattress that you can afford. For every £100 you spend on a mattress that works out at just 2.7p a night over 10 years.

A quality mattress can add on 5 minutes of undisturbed sleep a night. This soon adds up! That’s over half an hour’s extra sleep every week, and over a whole day extra over the course of a year!

So once you’ve found you’re perfect Bed Guru mattress there are a few tips and tricks you can use to look after it and prolong its life.

You should air a brand new mattress for around 4 hours when it first arrives. Then try to air your mattress every week for a few hours – make sure to turn back your bedding and sheets.

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector prolongs the life of your mattress and protects it from dirt, spillages and dead skin cells and prevents the growth of bacteria. Breathable mattress protectors also ensure that air circulates around your mattress. We have a wide range of mattress protectors, we recommend everyone uses one.

Turning Your Sprung Mattresses

With a sprung mattress it’s important to turn your mattress regularly. Your body weight compresses it and it can leave lumps and bumps around your regular sleeping position if you don’t turn your mattress. But this also depends on the type of sprung mattress you have. Some are ‘no turn’ which as the name suggests means you can’t turn them over but you can still rotate them from top to bottom. If you are unsure just give us a call and we can advise.

Don’t Turn a Memory Foam Mattress Over

You don’t need to turn a memory foam mattress over. Some memory foam mattresses have an additional comfort layer or gel layer on the top which wouldn’t be replicated on the underside if you were to turn it over. You should still rotate your memory foam mattress lengthways, once a month is adequate.

Natural Settlement

Don’t worry if you spot any indentations on your new mattress. Your natural sleeping area is only the width of your body and the centre and edges will be underused so your mattress might look like the sleeping areas are wearing quicker than the rest of your mattress but constant turning and rotation will ensure that you use different parts of your mattress and spread out any settlement.

Never fold your mattress! If you ever need to move your mattress or store it away, make sure you don’t fold it as that can damage the interior of the mattress and affect the comfort and support it gives you when you next use it.

As a general rule we recommend using a very mild detergent if you need to clean any stains or spills from your mattress. If you use a mattress protector it should prevent anything getting on your mattress, especially if you use a waterproof one. TopTip: If you have a stain or mark on your mattress, first wet it and then apply sodium bicarbonate.

If you want to give your mattress an extra freshen up, you can vacuum it every couple of months. Be careful not to damage the outer surface though as they can be delicate depending on the type of mattress you have. Use the soft brush attachment if you have one.

On the Edge

Try to avoid sitting on the edge of your mattress. Especially pocket sprung mattresses as it can misshape the sides of your mattress.

We hope these tips and tricks on how to care for your mattress are helpful.
