Once upon a time, a brand-new mattress would have cost you a pretty penny. And if you wanted luxury fillings, then you’d have to fork out yet more for the privilege – some could and still do of course set you back thousands of pounds. Today, there are many affordable mattress options, and with new developments in technology and the emergence of internet shopping, we have access to a host of inexpensive options. But are they worthwhile options?

Choosing the right filling

A mattress filling is the most important part of any good mattress buying decision, it's right at the heart of a good night’s sleep. Today, modern products have revolutionised the design of mattresses, so you don’t have to worry about hard springs jabbing you in the back any more. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer, and what’s the best mattress for you, no matter what your budget.

Memory foam mattresses

Want to feel like you’re almost weightless when you go to bed at night? Then a memory foam mattress will be right up your street. Memory foam is a viscoelastic material, meaning it becomes softer when touched by something warm – so when you lie down, it molds to fit the shape of your body, keeps your spine supported and aligned, and helps prevent an aching back.

Even if you’re on a tight budget, you should be able to afford a decent memory foam mattress. If you often wake up with a sore back, then this will be a great option for you. And whether you sleep on your side or your back, you’ll have the support you need for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Sprung mattresses

Bouncy and firm, lots of people would choose a sprung mattress over a memory foam one every day of the week. If you’re a hot sleeper and move around a lot, this is the option for you.

Several types of spring bed are available, including open-coil and pocket-sprung mattresses. If you’re looking for the cheapest option, an open-coil mattress is the one to go for, if you're looking for the most bang for your buck then go for the pocket sprung mattresses.

Things to remember

Spend as much of your budget as you can on a mattress, rather than a bed frame. Even the nicest bed frame in the world will be terrible with a cheap mattress. Make sure you buy a mattress that fits your bed base. If it’s cheap but a totally different size to what you require, then it’s not good for your sleeping posture. So make sure you don’t waste your money on something inappropriate. If you suffer from asthma or allergies then you will benefit from investing in hypoallergenic mattress protectors.
