How to make your bedroom cosy this autumn

The nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling from the trees and the temperature is dropping rapidly. It’s safe to say, autumn has arrived. Now is the time to make your bedroom cosy and prepare for the colder months ahead. 

There are a few subtle ways that you can ensure your bedroom is as cosy as possible and ready to handle the colder nights. We’ve put together a guide to show you how to make your bedroom cosy this autumn. 

Use the outdoors as your inspiration

One of the best parts of autumn is the colours that come flowing in from outside. In the summer, brighter and lighter colours bring out the best in your home. Now you need to be aiming to bring the warmth with you with darker and cosier colours, inspired by the fallen leaves outside. 

Darker wood is one colour that resonates with the autumn months. The dark timber brings a warm and cosy feel to your bedroom. So if you’re on the lookout for a new bed this autumn, then wooden beds are your best option. Cherry and Walnut, in particular, are warm colours with a vibrant grain and variety of tones.

Your bed is the most important part of your bedroom

This is the time of year when a lot of people start to redesign their bedrooms. When it comes to beds, your best bet is an upholstered bed. Not only do they ooze glamour, but their warm colours are also ideal for the autumn months. 

Naturally, your bed is where you’ll spend most of your time in your bedroom so you need to make sure it’s prepared for the colder climates. Pick neutral and darker colours for your bedding and make sure you have a duvet that’s up for the task. Think about investing in a thick mattress topper to give your bed additional warmth and comfort.  

Say goodbye to your summer bedding

The time has come to strip your bed of its summer sheets and get the winter sheets out of the cupboard. There's nothing worse than waking up cold, and summer bedding simply isn’t up to the task of tackling the colder weather so you need to think thick. The thicker the sheets the cosier and warmer you'll feel. A high tog duvet is a must but it’s also a good idea to have extra blankets and layer it up on those really cold nights. 


Keep the doors shut

One of the most important ways of keeping your bedroom warm is ensuring the heat doesn’t escape. Keeping your bedroom door shut when the heating is on will ensure the warm air doesn’t leave your bedroom. So, when you head to bed in the evening, you’ll have a nice warm bedroom to return to. Try and put the heating on just before you go to bed so your bedroom is at optimum warmth. 

Curtains are key

In the summer you may need lightweight curtains. Unfortunately, in the autumn and winter, they won’t keep the cold draft out. Consider swapping the airier, summer curtains for thicker drapes of blackout curtains. They ensure the warmth stays in your bedroom and blocks any cold drafts from sweeping through during the night. 

If there are cracks may in your window frames or they don't shut properly, we’d recommend getting them fixed now before the freezing temperatures arrive and add to your problems. It’s also important that you check your radiators and heating systems are in full working order. The last thing you want is for them to breakdown on a cold winter night.

Cosy fire

Create a cosy ambience 

Turn the lights down and light a candle to create the ideal cosy ambience in your bedroom. Low-watt lighting or spotlights with the addition of fairy lights will create a warming vibe in your bedroom. You might not think the lighting is important but it makes all the difference in creating a cosy atmosphere. 

Keep your body warm

Your bed isn’t the only important part of staying warm, you need to ensure you keep your body warm too. You may be able to allow your body to be free in the summer months, but in autumn, it's all about the fluffy pyjamas and hot chocolate.

If you have a partner, cuddle up close. The natural body heat transfers will keep you both nice and cosy in the night. If you’re still cold or have a bed to yourself then a hot water bottle or microwavable wheat bag will do the trick.
