26th February, 2019
by Carl Walsh

With World Book Day coming up on the 7th March 2019 we started thinking about what Books are the best bedtime reads right now.

You don’t have to be a bookworm to benefit from bedtime stories. Brainboxes at the University of Sussex discovered that reading for as little as six minutes could make you feel 68% calmer – although these books are so good, you might find yourself sneaking off to bed even earlier. Pick one. Pick a couple. Sleep easier when you’re relaxed.

Stories for sleepless youngsters

Curl up in bed together and win your nightly bedtime battle with one of these:

1. Good Night Yoga: A pose-by-pose bedtime story by Mariam Gates

Are your kids too bouncy for bedtime? You can get them in the mood with a book you don’t read lying down, but in all kinds of yoga poses. Join in with your kids and try poses like the Sun Breath and Clouds Gathering – which teach your youngsters to tune into their body and mind. Help them be still, mindful and self-soothing tonight with Mariam Gates’ story about how the world falls asleep.

2. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

You can’t go wrong with a classic fairytale at bedtime, but you could do a hundred times better. Watch your little lady realise there’s more to life than becoming Prince Charming’s wife, when you introduce her to 100 of the most extraordinary women who ever walked the planet. From Queen Elizabeth I to Serena Williams, Amelia Earhart to Michelle Obama – find your daughter a new heroine and inspire her to dream bigger tomorrow.

3. Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different by Ben Brooks

Do you have a little boy? Show him he doesn’t have to be a macho dragon slayer to be a top bloke. Get him the Children’s Book of the Year 2018 and read it together at bedtime. From Daniel Radcliffe and Nelson Mandela to Lionel Messi and Grayson Perry, you’ll meet a variety of men who rejected peer pressure, broke rules, got creative and went down as some of the greatest guys in history. There’s no reason your son couldn’t do it too.
