Getting a good night’s sleep is an essential part of our day, so picking the right mattress is vital. Poor sleep can not only affect your mood, but it can also have a negative impact on your body.
Your mattress can often be a cause of a bad night’s sleep if it’s not right for you, so we have put together the ultimate mattress guide to help you make your decision.
You have to take a number of factors into account:
What size mattress do you need?
What type of mattress do you need?
Do you need UK or EU sizes and what’s the difference between the two?
What firmness do you need?
We aim to answer all those questions for you throughout this blog.
What are the different mattress sizes?
There’s a multitude of different sizes available for you to choose from, and a lot of it depends on the bed frame you have. It’s important to measure your frame before you start looking for your mattress, the last thing you want is to buy one that’s too big or small!
The options are endless depending on your needs, and each size has a slight variance to a standard UK single bed which measures 90cm in width and 190cm in length (3ft x 6ft3). UK wide singles measure 107cm in width and 190cm (3ft6 x 6ft3) in length, with UK small singles measuring 75cm in width and 190cm (2ft6 x 6ft3) in length.
UK Double: UK Double mattresses measure 135cm in width by 190cm in length (4ft6 x 6ft3). They are one of the most popular mattress ranges, particularly with couples, as they don’t occupy too much space in a room. There are also Small Doubles available which measure 120cm in width and 190cm in length (4ft x 6ft3).
King size mattresses measure 150cm in width and 200cm in length (5ft x 6ft6), and Super King mattresses measure 180cm in width and 200cm in length (6ft x 6ft6).
EU Single: A European Single mattress is the smallest in our range of European mattresses, and measures 90cm in width and 200cm in length (3ft x 6ft6). They’re 10cm longer than the standard UK Single. Read on to find out why later on in the guide.
EU Double: The European Double mattress is the middle sized mattress in the European range, they measure 140cm in width by 200cm in length (4ft7 x 6ft6). They measure 5cm wider and 10cm longer than a UK Double.
EU King: The largest in the range, the European King mattress measures 160cm in width and 200cm in length (5ft3 x 6ft6). This makes it 10cm wider than a UK King but not as wide as a UK Super King.
Special Size: At Bed Guru we are able to provide you with a number of different, bespoke, Special Size mattresses with a range of different widths and lengths from Small Singles at 80cm in width by 200cm in length (2ft7 x 6ft6), to a Short King at 150cm in width and 175cm in length (5ft x 5ft9). Our special sizes are created to suit unique bedroom sizes.
What types of mattress are available?
Not only do you have to consider the size of your mattress, but you also need to take into account the type. We offer a wide selection to choose from, and your choice can depend on a number of factors such as allergies, chronic back problems and sleeping style.
Body Support: Pocket Sprung mattresses provide you with great support for your body. The mattress is able to mould to your body shape, and this can help to relieve pressure on your spine. It can also align your back and improve your posture in the process.
Allergy Relieving: If you suffer from allergies whilst you sleep then you may want to look to Natural mattresses. They are less likely to irritate your skin or allergies due to the fact they are not made out of synthetic materials. Pocket Sprung mattresses are also a great solution for allergies.
Do you sleep with a fidgeter?: If you do then you’ll be glad to know there’s a solution for your problem, in the form of a memory foam mattress. They not only absorb heat and mould to your body shape, but they are also shock absorbent so you won’t feel the effects of sleeping next to a restless sleeper.
Are you a traditionalist?: There are a number of more traditional mattresses available in the form of a Sprung mattress. Unlike Memory Foam mattresses, Sprung mattresses don’t rely on the contour of your body, they just naturally form around you.
Hotel Ready: If you are looking for mattresses suitable for hotels or bed & breakfasts then we stock a full range of mattresses that will leave your guests wanting to come back for more. The Hotel & Contract mattresses come in a variety of styles from memory foam, to pocket sprung. They are sure to give your guests the best night sleep possible.
What’s the difference between a UK and an EU mattress?
There are some small and subtle differences between a UK mattress and an EU mattress, and this mostly comes down to the size, in particular, the length.
This mostly comes down to the difference in European and UK bed frames. European mattresses fit the sizes of European bed frames which are usually slightly larger than UK ones. You may not realise that your bed frame is actually European so make sure to check before you decide on your mattress size.
Get the firmness right
Getting the right mattress firmness can be the difference between a good and a bad night’s sleep. Here at Bed Guru, our range of mattresses come in five different levels of firmness:
Depending on what your needs are, each firmness rating can have a different impact for you. For example, if you struggle from chronic back problems then you may want to consider a firmer mattress. Although the idea of a lovely soft mattress is desirable, a firmer mattress is going to help you a lot more.
If, however, you are looking to sink into your mattress at night then firmness rating 5 is probably right for you.
