6 bedroom colour trends of 2023

7th February, 2023

When considering what colour is best for your bedroom, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest interior trends and forget about how much our bedroom décor can affect our sleep. From feng shui to the colour of the walls, our sleep environment plays a massive part in the quality of our sleep.

Don’t get us wrong, we understand that your bedroom colour scheme ultimately comes down to personal preference. However, this may give a little insight into what colours are best for creating a little zen in the bedroom.

Cortisol and melatonin have a huge impact on our sleep cycles. Our body produces more cortisol in the mornings to make us more alert, and in the evening our body produces melatonin to make us feel more relaxed before heading off to bed.

Sleep expert explains what colours promote good quality sleep

Carl Walsh, sleep specialist and owner of Bed Guru, advises that:

‘’generally softer shades are known to be soothing and promote good quality sleep. This is because they are non-stimulating, therefore encouraging your body to produce melatonin as you head off to bed.’’

Carl Walsh goes on to explain that:

‘’brighter, more vibrant colours […] stimulate your brain and encourage your body to produce more cortisol, resulting in poorer sleep quality’’

6 popular bedroom colours and why they could help you sleep better

Bed Guru has investigated the most popular bedroom colours, the impact they have on your sleep quality and whether these colours are in or out in 2023.

Having looked at search data and Pinterest trends, here are the results:

1. Green

(6,600 average monthly Google searches)

This popular colour is set to remain a staple in people's bedrooms with a 90% increase in searches for green bedroom ideas on Pinterest in the new year. Whether you’re opting for paler shades or more of a forest green, green is known to have a calming and soothing effect on people as it has connotations to the outdoors and nature. This is said to create a more serene and peaceful atmosphere in the bedroom, therefore encouraging relaxation and promoting better quality sleep.

2. Sage Green

(5,400 average monthly Google searches)

We will continue to see more natural, muted and earthy tones in people's homes in 2023. Sage green is one of the more popular colour choices, especially in bedrooms! Search data analysis revealed that sage green was a close second favourite with 5,400 average monthly searches. In 2023, we can expect to see more and more people using sage green in their bedrooms. On Pinterest, there has been a 24% increase in searches for sage green bedrooms and a 60% increase in searches for sage green bedroom ideas since last year!

Sage green doesn’t only look aesthetic in your bedroom, but there are actual sleep benefits. As with other shades of green, it creates a more relaxing sleep environment because of its connotations of the outdoors and nature. Sage green specifically is a much softer, earthier tone so will be non-stimulating and won’t have a negative impact on your sleep.

3. Grey

(5,400 average monthly Google searches)

Grey is an extremely versatile colour and has worked well with more traditional interiors, in modern and contemporary homes and even matched well with the boho vibes. However, our search data analysis suggests that this cool-toned trend is on the way out!

Instead of grey, more people are now using ‘greige’. This colour is very much as it sounds, it’s the perfect combination of grey and beige! Greige adds a warmer, earthier and homely feel to a usually quite flat, all-over grey interior. Last month on Pinterest there was a 60% increase in searches for greige bedrooms, and a 52% increase in searches for greige bedrooms compared to last year.

Despite having seen a decline in popularity, grey still remains in the top 3 bedroom colours. As a neutral and non-stimulating colour, grey certainly won’t disturb your sleep. However, it can be quite placid and uninspiring so won’t necessarily be a mood booster in the mornings!

4. Black

(4,400 average monthly Google searches)

It’s not new news that black accents have been creeping into homes here and there. People have begun using black hardware, light shades, and furniture and some are even brave enough to opt for black doors or a stylish black accent wall. Compared to last year, there has been a 500% increase in searches for cosy black bedrooms and a 200% on Pinterest! It seems that black is going to be bringing cosy vibes to people's homes in 2023.

Besides doing wonders for creating a pitch-black room at night, an all-black bedroom doesn’t sound too appealing. Black can make a room feel much smaller, making some people feel closed in. This doesn’t create a calm and relaxing sleep environment that is going to encourage good quality sleep. Black is also synonymous with sadness, mystery and even death. This will encourage feelings of stress and anxiety before heading off to bed and may negatively impact your sleep.

5. White

(3,600 average monthly Google searches)

You don’t often see true white being used in homes too much anymore as its starkness can seem clinical and people are now opting for warmer white warmer. This not only helps give a more homely atmosphere, but stark white doesn’t stay white for long enough in most people's homes. People are choosing more neutral tones for their bedrooms in 2023. On Pinterest searches for neutral bedrooms have increased by 39%!

Most people say white is good for promoting good quality sleep because it is a clean colour that has connotations of peace, purity and simplicity. However, true white can create a bright and airy atmosphere which can make you feel more awake and alert – so, it may not be the best colour for a bedroom. Off-white and warmer tones of white may work better to achieve the clean bedroom aesthetic whilst also being soft enough to create a more calming environment in the evenings.

6. Blue

(3,600 average monthly Google searches)

Blue bedrooms made a comeback last Spring and Summer with the coastal grandma aesthetic that became popular on TikTok. Since then, interest in blue bedrooms has died down with searches for blue bedrooms on Pinterest seeing a 33% decrease over the past three months.

Blue is known to be a good colour to have in your bedroom because of its association with the colour of the ocean and the sky. This can create a sense of tranquillity and peacefulness in the bedroom. Connotations of the ocean will have a particularly calming effect as it reminds a lot of people of being on holiday. Additionally, many people listen to ocean sounds as they’re falling asleep because it relaxes them.
