The term ‘Queen sized bed’ came from America as the US has much bigger beds than we do here in the UK. As the US has bigger beds, they needed to manufacture a slightly bigger size than our king-sized beds here in the UK and it only made sense this should be called a Queen. So, the US Queen sized bed dimension is equivalent to the UK King sized bed.
Like most bed and mattresses providers in the UK, even though we don’t stock Queen sized beds at Bed Guru, you might see the term ‘Queen-sized bed’ floating around in your search engines when trying to find the perfect sized mattress and bed, and this is sometimes because small double beds are referred to as queen size beds. So, because understanding what a queen sized bed is can be confusing, we thought we’d clear things up and explain exactly what a Queen-sized bed is!
What dimensions does a queen-sized bed and mattress have?
In the UK:
In metric dimensions, a Queen-sized bed and mattress in the UK is 120cm wide and 190cm long. This is equal to 4 feet wide and 6 feet 3 inches long. They’re most suited to one person but can accommodate two adults if necessary. If your bedroom is smaller than average, Queen sized beds in the UK are ideal, especially if you choose a divan or ottoman base which maximises storage.
