When your wardrobe’s full to bursting, you can hardly close your chest of drawers, and there’s clutter all over your bedroom, you know it’s time for a new storage solution. If this sounds familiar, an ottoman bed could just be the answer. Storage beds are the easiest way to create extra room for all your stuff, without having to compromise on floor space. That way, you can really make the most of the square footage you have.

There’s no doubt that ottoman beds are practical, but do they tick all the boxes when it comes to comfort? Let’s find out…

Firstly, what exactly is an ottoman bed?

An ottoman bed is a bed with built-in storage hidden beneath the mattress. With most ottoman beds, a hydraulic lift system allows you to raise the top of the bed effortlessly in order to access the storage. They can lift from either the bottom or the side of the bed, and half-opening options are also available. Depending on which size you go for, ottoman beds can give you around a square metre of storage space.

This means that, unlike other bed frames, there’s no empty space underneath the bed – instead, the attractive base that provides a seamless finish right down to the floor.  So, rather than slipping boxes underneath the bed and leave them to gather dust, ottoman beds with built-in storage make it easier than ever to declutter your bedroom.

Are they comfortable?

Just like other types of bed frame, ottomans are designed to deliver comfort and support for your body. They’re constructed from lightweight metal frames, and they’re kitted out with all the robust fittings and traditional features you’d expect from other beds. You can also take your pick from a selection of sizes – whether that’s a single ottoman to keep your child’s room nice and tidy, or a king-size version for your very own master suite.

While the bed frame itself does play a role in overall comfort levels, there’s another essential factor to consider – the mattress.

Getting the right mattress is key

With most other bed types, you’d pick a mattress based solely on your individual preferences. You’d consider factors like the level of firmness you need, how you feel about memory foam, and whether you want to go for a latex or allergen-free mattress. But, if you’re going for an ottoman, some other factors will impact your choice of mattress.

Remember, most ottoman beds feature a hydraulic lift system. So, in order to ensure it works properly, you might like to go for a lighter mattress. In general, it’s best to steer clear of traditional metal-sprung variants, which tend to much heavier than alternative options.

Which mattress is best?

Lightweight mattresses can be the best fit for an ottoman bed. Memory foam and ‘mattress in a box’ options are two possible solutions – they strike the perfect balance between lightweight, which suits the frame well, and comfort, because they’re made from very dense foam.

It’s worth bearing in mind that these can be more expensive than more traditional options. However, because they provide superb levels of support without putting unnecessary strain on the lift mechanism of an ottoman bed, memory foam and mattress in a box options can be well worth the investment. If you’re absolutely set on choosing a sprung mattress (which can be cheaper), it’s wise to look for a slightly thinner one.

In order to maximise your comfort, don’t forget to check your mattress is compatible with the slats of your ottoman bed. This is because certain mattresses need bigger gaps, while other mattresses require closer slats. It all depends on the mattress materials and design.

Create a better environment

Seeing as your bed is likely the be the biggest piece of furniture in your room, why not make it a multi-functional one? The extra storage you gain with an ottoman bed can make a dramatic difference to how your room looks and feels. It gives you the opportunity to declutter your room with minimal effort – and you know what they say, a clear space means a clear mind, and that could just help you get a better night’s sleep.
