We all have those pressing bed questions that we just can’t seem to find an answer for. Whether it be how often you should turn your mattress? or how you stop a duvet hogger? This is where the Bed Guru comes in.

We pulled him to one side and put him to the test with some of the most asked about bed questions that we have been asked.

So let’s take a closer look at some of the most asked bed questions finally getting answered…

What is the best mattress for someone suffering from allergies?

The type of mattress you sleep on can have a huge impact on whether your allergies flare-up or not. Allergy flare ups are actually caused by dust mites, more specifically, their faeces.

Your best bet is to look at Memory Foam mattresses and Latex Mattresses.  These mattresses have great hypoallergenic qualities as the fabric is not livable for dust mites.

How often do you need to change your bed sheets?

The honest answer to this question is every day. This promotes the best night's sleep and is why staying in a hotel is always a joy.

Realistically, not everyone has time to change their bed sheets on a daily basis. If you are able to change your sheets every 2 weeks then you are likely to still get a great night’s sleep.

It’s important you don’t leave them too long, because dirt, oils from the skin, saliva and dead skin cells can gather and this creates a haven for dust mites.

What’s the difference between a single bed and a small double bed?

There is a slight difference in size between the two. A UK Single measures 3ft x 6ft3 - 90 x 200cm or a Metric EU Single is 3ft x 6ft6 - 90 x 200cm.

A UK Small double give you more width, which is great for growing teens, young adults and for spare rooms. A UK Small Double measures 4ft x 6ft3 (122 x 190cm) or a EU Small Double 120 x 190 (or 200cm).

How often should I flip my mattress?

If your able to turn your mattress when new once a week for the first month will do the trick. This allows the upholstery to settle more evenly whilst you break it in.

Once you’ve broken it in a little, turning it quarterly (every 3 months) will follow suit with the technique used by hotels.

What’s the best bed for storage?

Your best bet is to take a look at Ottoman storage beds. They provide you with a great space underneath your bed for storage. Ottoman beds lift so you can utilise all the space available under your bed.

They are great for smaller bedrooms and guest bedrooms, as they allow you to fully maximise the space you have available to you.

What’s the best bed for a confined space?

You need to ask yourself, what space do you have available? Do you need storage to save the need for a chest of drawers or wardrobes? Ottoman beds take away the need for loads of exterior storage as you can simply store it under your bed.

You need to be realistic with the space you have. If it’s a smaller space and only you living in it, then maybe a single bed is a sensible option. If you are sharing, do you really need a king size bed? A double bed still provides you and your partner with loads of room. So just assess the space you have, and think sensibly.

What’s so good about memory foam?

Memory foam mattresses use your body heat to mould to your posture and improves your posture providing you with a better night’s sleep.

Higher quality models offer you with a higher density and deeper memory foam layers with channelled reflex foam support beneath. This provides you with unrivalled levels of comfort and a brilliant night’s sleep. The only problem is, you won’t want to get out of bed!

How do you stop a duvet hogger?

We all know a duvet hogger, and stopping them, particularly in their duvet hogging prime is difficult. Maybe consider separate duvets? This gives you both a duvet, and there will be no hogging issues.

An extreme fix is getting separate beds, but no one really wants to sleep away from their partner. Perhaps invest in an additional blanket they can cuddle, otherwise, separate duvets are the way forward!

What’s the difference between a wood and a metal bed frame?

This really comes down to what looks great to you, and suits your budget. Both wooden beds and metal beds offer you a sturdy bed frame. Wooden frames give a more rustic feel, whereas metal bed frames look more modern and contemporary.

What size mattress should I get?

For the best night’s sleep it’s important you get a mattress as wide as possible. A mattress of around 3ft (90cm) wide is recommended for children.

For couples you need as much space as you possibly can get. We would recommend a King Size mattress (150cm/5ft wide), or even a Super King Size mattress (180cm/6ft wide) if you want even more space.

How often do you need to clean your mattress?

If you are willing to invest in a good mattress protector then you may not have to clean your mattress on a regular basis.

It’s worth keeping your eye on your mattress, if you notice any gross stains then try and remove them to the best of your ability. Remove your bedding and try and imagine if you would be happy sleeping on your mattress. If you wouldn’t, then it’s time for a clean.

What’s the best pillow for an allergy sufferer?

This depends on what it is you’re actually allergic too. If, for example, you often have reactions to feathers, then a feather pillow isn’t a good choice! You are best trying dacron pillows or polyester pillows to prevent your allergies flaring up.

If it’s dust mites that are flaring your allergies up then you may need a pillow protector, and need to regularly clean your pillows.

How do I choose the right bed for me?

This generally comes down to what your personal preference is, and what it is you require from your bed. Here at Bed Guru we are more than happy to help you make the right decision. Feel free to contact us and ask us any bed related questions, we will endeavour to answer them for you!
