Best ways to clean your mattress

Keeping a mattress clean can be a difficult task. Over the years your mattress gets the worst of you, from sweat and drool to skin oils and old skin flakes. Our mattresses collect it all.

With that in mind, you can see why they need a good clean from time to time. The best way to go about this is to find the most natural solution possible. This not only benefits our mattresses health but also our own. Chemicals can cause damage to our skin, lungs and eyes so natural is the way forward! 

Like most people, you wash your bed sheets on a regular basis, but why not show the same love to your mattress? To save you time and money, we’ve rounded up the best ways to clean your mattress.

Why do I need to clean my mattress?

Mattresses are a breeding ground for dust mites and bed bugs that feed on your bodily fluids and dead skin cells. Over time forming stains and making your mattress a generally unhygienic place. 

Cleaning your mattress is particularly important in the summer as higher temperatures result in more sweat and the ideal breeding ground for bed bugs and bacteria. If you have small children or pets, it’s likely your mattress will have stains you don’t even know about. 

How do I clean my mattress?

Although expensive branded products do the job, there are less expensive and more effective natural ways to clean your mattress. 

On average you should clean your mattress at least once every 6 months. The process is very simple, and shouldn’t take you too long to complete. All you need to do is follow these 5 steps:

1 - Vacuum the mattress

Strip the bed of its bed sheets and give the mattress a quick vacuum. This removes any loose crumbs, hair, and flakes of skin that are trapped on the surface. 

2 - Spread baking soda across the surface

Mix one cup of baking soda with lavender essential oils and spread across the surface of your mattress. Gently rub it in with a scrub brush and ensure it’s evenly spread over the mattress. This formula attacks any lingering odours which can gather over time.

3 - Vacuum the mattress again

Allow the formula to sit for around 10 minutes before vacuuming away the remaining formula. This should leave your mattress smelling fresh and almost new. 

4 - Remove any lingering stains

Unfortunately, mattresses do typically acquire hard to handle stains. This includes blood, urine, sweat and other bodily fluids. It’s always best to try and treat stains immediately, but this isn’t always possible.

How do I deal with difficult stains?

There are numerous awkward stains that can be very difficult to get rid of. We’re going to take you through some of the main culprits and show you how you can leave your mattress sparkly clean again. 

Dried Blood Stains

To remove dried blood stains you’ll need 3 things: 

  • 1 tablespoon of liquid soap/washing up liquid

  • 1 tablespoon of salt

  • ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide (you may need more depending on the affected area)

Mix these together to create a paste. Once mixed, apply evenly over the affected area and allow it to dry. As soon as it’s dried, simply scrape off the residue and dab away at any remaining stains with a white cloth dipped in hydrogen peroxide. 

 

Urine Stains

Urine stains are one of the more common mattress stains. They’re notoriously difficult stains to remove, but not impossible. All you need is:

  • 3 tablespoons of dry laundry powder (has to be the powder)

  • 1 tablespoon of water

The process is simple. Mix the laundry powder and the water to create a dry foam. Spread evenly over the affected area and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Scrape away the dried foam with a spoon and use a white cloth and hydrogen peroxide to remove any remaining bits of foam. Once the area has dried off, give it a quick vacuum and you’re done! 

Sick stains

The last of the stubborn stains we’re going to look at. We’d advise you open the window for this one! You’ll need the following:

  • Unscented household ammonia

  • Baking soda

All you need to do is lightly dampen the corner of a plain cloth with the ammonia and blot the stain. Use a separate cloth with fresh water to wipe around the affected area and this should lift the stain. If it doesn’t lift immediately then wait 5 minutes and attempt the process again.

Once the stain has gone, wipe the area with a damp, clean cloth dipped in water. Sprinkle around the damp area with baking soda. This should neutralise the ammonia and lift any of the remaining moisture from your mattress. Allow this to dry and then vacuum away any of the remaining baking soda from your mattress. 

How do I prevent stains on my mattress?
