How to spring clean your bedroom in autumn | Bed Guru

Find out how spring cleaning your bedroom in autumn can help you sleep better.

4th October, 2023

As the leaves start to fall and temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to wash away the summer and prepare for the cosy season ahead.

From decluttering your wardrobe to deep cleaning your mattress and bedding, Carl Walsh, our resident sleep expert, explains how spring cleaning your bedroom in time for autumn can help you sleep better.

Why should I spring clean my bedroom in Autumn?

Many people choose to give their house a spring clean as they see it as a chance to wash away the winter blues and freshen up their home for the spring-summer season.

We believe the same should apply to the autumn-winter season. Now is the perfect time to do a deep clean and reset before Fall falls.

Here are 4 reasons a post-summer clean is essential:

  • Increased footfall from outside means more dirt will have accumulated across the house
  • Having had the windows open for most of the summer, there will be more pollen, dust and potentially dirt from outside that’s settled inside
  • Cleaning after summer will get rid of summer allergens to help adults who suffer from allergies to alleviate any symptoms
  • Having sweated more during the hot weather, it’s the perfect time to deep clean your mattress and bedding

It not only gives you the chance to rest ahead of the new season, but keep on top of any general maintenance. For example, autumn is a good time to bleed your radiators to ensure your heating system is working efficiently.

How can a tidy bedroom help you sleep better?

Remember the age-old saying ‘’tidy house, tidy mind’’? There really is some truth in it. There is evidence to suggest that a dirty and cluttered bedroom can be linked to poor quality sleep.

Piles of clothes, scattered belongings and a messy bed aren’t conducive to a relaxing sleep environment. An untidy bedroom can make you feel more stressed and make it harder to relax and unwind before bedtime.

How to spring clean your bedroom in time for Autumn?

There are many different ways you can get your house, more specifically your bedroom, ready for Autumn and Winter. Here are our top tips for spring cleaning your bedroom in time for Autumn.

  1. Declutter your clothes

Going through your wardrobe and getting rid of any old clothes is an easy way to make your bedroom feel less cluttered. As the weather has cooled down, you can also pack away your summer clothes.

Ottoman beds are the perfect storage spot for off-season clothes storage. Put them in storage boxes or vacuum pack bags before hiding them away in your ottoman bed storage.

  1. Deep cleaning your mattress

We recommend deep cleaning your mattress every six months; this makes your spring and autumn deep cleans the perfect time to do so.

3 easy ways to deep clean your mattress:

  • Vacuum your mattress to remove dead skin, dust and other bits of dirt
  • Remove spot stains as quickly as possible; for most stains use warmer water and washing up liquid, but for blood stains use cold water and washing up liquid
  • Sprinkle your mattress with bicarbonate of soda, leave it in the sun for a few hours before hoovering the remnants off
  1. Cleaning bedroom furniture

When spring cleaning your bedroom, we recommend cleaning the inside and outside of your bedroom furniture. Empty your clothes out of your bedroom furniture so you’re able to get rid of all the dust and dirt from any nooks and crannies.

Use a duster to wipe round the inside of drawers, dust shelves and wipe down the exterior. You should now use a slightly damp microfibre cloth to wipe down the inside and outside to finish cleaning your bedroom furniture.

  1. Clean your bedding

During the summer months, your bedding will have absorbed a lot of sweat. Here are a couple of quick and simple ways to clean your duvet and pillows:

  • How to clean your duvet: Most duvets can be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. If it is still dripping wet, put it on for another spin cycle. If possible, leave to dry in the sun.
  • How to clean your pillows: To spot-clean your pillow or duvet, mix a mild detergent with water until it bubbles before gently rubbing this solution into the stain until it comes out. Leave it to air dry.
  • How to clean memory foam pillows: Fill a large container or bathtub with lukewarm water and gentle detergent. Submerge your pillow, and squeeze it a few times to let the soapy water clean the inside of the pillow. Empty the water, refill with new clean water and repeat the previous steps until the water runs clean. Once the water runs clean, gently squeeze but don't twist the water out of your pillow before leaving it to air dry.
