A duvet day is well known for boosting both your mental and physical health. So, what are you waiting for? Read on to find out more.

Everyone loves a duvet day. Sometimes we simply find that we need one whether that’s through stress at work or a lack of sleep during the week. Duvet days gives us a chance to lay back and reflect, as well as relax and catch up on all the Netflix we’ve missed.

What is a duvet day?

A duvet day is exactly what it says on the tin, a day dedicated to you and your duvet. They’re renowned for improving mental and physical wellbeing and scientific research has been conducted to prove the benefits they have. We’ve written our top 5 reasons we feel you should have a duvet day.

Paws under duvet

1 - Taking a bit of ‘me time’

There’s nothing better than being wrapped up inside your duvet and stretching out across your king size bed with the full satisfaction that you have nothing to do but relax. We spend most of our lives around other people. We regularly put family, friends and colleagues first so it’s important we find some time for ourselves and our own wellbeing.

You’ll often find that, by taking a bit of time for yourself, you’ll step into a better frame of mind. This not only benefits you but also the people around you. It doesn’t matter whether you sit and read a book, watch some tele or don’t do anything at all, just having that bit of time to yourself can do wonders for your mood and stress levels.

2 - Boost your body and immune system

According to a 2010 study by the University of Pennsylvania, just one lie in on a weekend can boost your brain power. Dr David Dinges, chief of the Division of Sleep and Chronobiology at the University of Pennsylvania and leader of the study, stated:

"The additional hour or two of sleep in the morning after a period of chronic partial sleep loss has genuine benefits for continued recovery of behavioural alertness.”

As well as improving your alertness and brain power, the study also found sleep improves your attention span. So, perhaps a lie in on Sunday before heading back to work isn’t a bad idea?

A little bit of extra sleep also provides great support for your immune system. It can help to fight off colds, coughs and other illnesses. If you’re starting to feel a bit under the weather then your best bet is to rest up, a duvet day could be your answer to feeling fit and healthy again.

3 - Improve your energy levels

Although a coffee in the morning has an immediate effect on your energy levels, it doesn’t have a longer term impact. The same Pennsylvania University study suggests that a lie in can benefit our energy levels on a longer term basis.

It’s important to note, this does have a longer term impact but in the general scheme of things it’s only a short term fix. You still need to recognise the importance of a quality night’s sleep. Don’t rely on a lie in on Sunday to be your permanent fix, you need to establish a proper sleep routine and only use a duvet day if you need a quick energy boost.

4 - Relieve Stress

Adults generally live incredibly busy lifestyles and this can often lead to stress. We often feel that we don’t get an opportunity to just lay back and relax because of our hectic lifestyles. Taking time to step back and relax can dramatically reduce your stress.

Duvet days are a great opportunity to have a period of recuperation from the general stresses of life. Switch your phone off, step away from your multitude of social media accounts, ignore the news and your work emails and totally relax.

5 - Increase in productivity and motivation

Have you felt your productivity slip at home or work? Then a duvet day, although it takes a day out of your busy schedule, can actually help improve your productivity for the rest of the week.

With a day of proper rest, you’ll find your productivity levels dramatically increase. It was found that a night out drinking on a Saturday can have an impact on your work for the rest of the week if you don’t catch up on the sleep. You’ll be more motivated which in turn, leads to an increase in productivity which is great not only for you but also your employer!
